Compost Awareness Week finale
The 9th annual Compost Awareness Week is being celebrated with a grand finale this weekend in Warwick.
The week got underway on Sunday 2nd and runs until Saturday. The theme for this year’s week is ‘Give it a Grow’ and aims to encourage us all to try and grow vegetables at home.
And to celebrate the week a composting roadshow will be visiting the Warwick Garden Festival, in Warwick’s Market Square, on Sunday 9th May from 10am till 4pm where staff will be on hand to offer advice on composting issues, and visitors can also pick up a packet of free vegetable seeds.
Those who can’t make it to the roadshow, and need a helping hand to get composting or just need a little advice, can find assistance through the Warwickshire Waste Partnership, which has a group of committed Master Composter volunteers, trained in the art of composting.
They can solve many common composting problems and get people on the way to making their own free compost.
Every year thousands of tonnes of kitchen and garden waste are thrown in the dustbin, which usually ends up in expensive, unsightly and environmentally damaging landfill sites. By composting at home, the householder is able to produce a free source of nutrient rich soil conditioner for the garden with very little effort.
Warwickshire are currently recruiting volunteer Master Composters – anyone who would like to become part of the scheme, please e-mail waste@warwickshire.gov.uk for further details.
If you do not already compost at home, why not give it a go? Compost bins do not have to cost the earth and can simply be made from 4 used pallets, tied together to form a box. Alternatively, bins made from recycled plastic can be purchased from as little as £14.50. Please visit http://www.wcc.getcomposting.com .
