Learning is a family affair

Learn something new in your local library, thanks to a series of taster sessions to mark Adult Learners' Week from 15-21 May 2010.

Warwickshire County Council’s Library Service will be dedicating the week to family past and present this year, whether you would like to learn more about your ancestors through a course in family history or you would like help with storytelling and introducing your offspring to books.

Now in its 19th year, Adult Learners’ Week is the UK’s largest festival of learning and is coordinated by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education). It aims to inspire people to have a go - whether it is learning a new skill, learning for fun, or catching up on learning missed at school.

From low-tech family history in Leamington to finding your ancestors on the internet in Kingsbury there are many sessions created to inspire a journey of learning. Memories of work and industry will be recounted in Coleshill, while the highly acclaimed ‘History on your Doorstep’ project will offering free taster sessions in Alcester, Bedworth and Kenilworth. Parents and carers of the under 5s are also encouraged to venture into the world of children’s books at a free Bookstart coffee morning in Warwick.

Jan Dawson, Reader Development Librarian for Warwickshire County Council, said: “We want to encourage and inspire adults across the county to try something new in our libraries. You never know where your journey of learning will take you.”
