Schools go bananas for Fruity Friday
Pupils from Chetwynd Junior School in Nuneaton will be tucking into a special fun and fruity lunch on Friday 14 May to mark Cancer Prevention Week.
The Fruity Friday lunch will be prepared by Warwickshire County Council’s caterers as part of a World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) initiative to raise awareness of the links between diet, nutrition and cancer prevention by promoting eating fruit.
Pupils will be joining schools around the county to enjoy the fruit filled feast. Lemon sole or cheesy pineapple pizza will be served with garden peas or fantastically fruity salad and for dessert really raspberry fruity jelly or chocolate and mandarin brownies are on the menu. Drinks include banana milkshakes or lemon water. The youngsters have a choice of potatoes, or wholemeal bread to accompany their meal.
Lindsay Higgins, Development Manager for Warwickshire County Caterers
said: “Fruity Friday is an excellent way to promote the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet, with the added benefit of offering support to a valuable cause. Children who eat better, do better and we are really pleased that we have been able to implement healthy eating so successfully in Warwickshire”.
County Councillor and resources portfolio holder Martin Heatley added: “Fruity Friday is an annual event for our school caterers and always popular with pupils.
“The journal Appetite recently reported on a study which showed that children will eat more fruit if it is made attractive and fun, something that the county’s creative cooks are really good at doing.”
Fruity Friday is just the latest initiative being run by Warwickshire County Council to promote healthy school meals. The service’s main aim is to provide varied menus featuring healthy food that is fun to eat.
