Small steps to save cash

Walking to school just one day a week can save the average family £68 a year in fuel.

National Walk to School Week gets underway today until Friday, and schools are being reminded during the week of the benefits.

A report by AA Financial Services found that mums and dads are clocking up 2,000 miles each year on the school run and that 11 per cent of parents travel up to 4,000 miles a year which ends up costing an average of £687 in fuel.

A recent poll showed the average family is spending more than £340 a year on fuel just taking their children to school and other clubs and activities. And with the cost of fuel continually on the rise the average school run fuel bill is likely to increase by around £60 a year.

Thousands of children across Warwickshire will be stepping out this week and saving their parents money in the process.

Warwickshire has 112 Primary Schools taking part in this year’s Walk to School Week. This time the theme is Walk Your Way. Focussing on how walking to school helps children learn vital orientating skills to help them navigate and get to know their local area, improving confidence and safety.

Milby Primary School in Nuneaton is holding a walk home tea party on Wednesday to encourage families to meet up and all walk home together.

Amy Moran who teaches at Milby Primary said: “The children love the walk home tea as it gives them a chance to enjoy walking and talking to their parents and their friends on the way home from school.

“Families that live further away from school can still take part by parking at the Ambleside Sports Club. That way they are still getting a healthy walk and saving some money on fuel.”
