Can you dig it? Yes you can

Pupils at St Andrew’s Benn School are having an after school gardening day on Thursday 27 May as it looks to share its remarkable record for gardening with parents and the community.

Despite not having a school field, the school has twice won Rugby in Bloom awards in the last two years.

The event has been organised by Miss Caroline King and Mrs Trisha Snowdon who run the school’s successful gardening club.

The school is also uniquely multi-cultural with a total of 17 languages spoken by pupils.  The gardening session is seen as an excellent opportunity to bring together some of the different communities in the borough and involve parents in the work of the school.

Acting Head teacher, Abi Huggins, said:  “Gardening is a popular pursuit and one that we have encouraged at the school, particularly as some of the children do not have an experience of a garden and it gives them a great opportunity to show their skills.  Its appeal will engage all communities.  This session will hopefully give parents and the community an opportunity to see the amazing work we are doing at the school and to meet each other and have a bit of fun.

“If we can encourage parents to follow in their children’s green-fingered footsteps and get into gardening, that can only be good for Rugby.”

Cluster co-ordinator, Chris Blay, who works with Warwickshire County Council’s extended services team to provide activities in the area, said: “St Andrew’s has a well-earned reputation locally for the quality of its flowers and we are hoping that they will share their secret with members of the community.”

St Andrews Benn C of E Primary School opens its doors at 3.15-5pm. All members of the local community are welcome.
