Silver surfers get help from the youngsters
Older people in Rugby are getting the chance to learn how to surf the net with lessons from the experts – schoolchildren throughout the borough.
Warwickshire County Council’s Extended Services team has worked with the cluster co-ordinator to provide online training throughout the area for people aged over 50.
The young people have sent personal invites to grandparents and residents of sheltered housing. Among the lessons they will be giving is how to make the best use of search engines.
The sessions are aimed at encouraging younger people to work with other generations and to help older people to overcome anxieties so that they can enjoy the benefits of digital technology.
Approximately 20 schools have signed up to the project with their doors opening on Friday for the sessions which will start at 10am with each year group having an hour long session through the day..
Councillor Heather Timms, portfolio holder for children, young people and families, said: “The children have been looking forward to sharing their knowledge with the older people and it will be a great learning opportunity for both parties.
“Intergenerational activities are a wonderful way of encouraging all of the community to work together and make terrific contribution to its cohesion.”
