Statement regarding bus crash A4177

The following statements have been issued in relation to a collision involving a school bus carrying secondary school children from Aylesford and Myton Schools yesterday. The collision took place near Hatton, on the A4177 at 4pm on 18 May.

Steven Hall, Headteacher of Aylesford School, said: “We are thankful that so many students escaped serious injury in the road traffic accident yesterday.

“Our thoughts are with the one student who was flown to hospital last night suffering from leg and facial injuries. We have contacted parents this morning and his condition is serious but stable. We are also saddened by the tragic loss of life of two adults and our thoughts are also with the families of those concerned.

“Students who are in school today have been offered the opportunity to talk though their experience with a team of trained staff.”

Paul MacIntyre, Headteacher at Myton School, said: “A small number of our students were travelling on the bus and we are thankful that they did not sustain more serious injuries.  We have been in contact with the families of our students offering our ongoing support. The whole school community sends their condolences to the families of the adults who lost their lives in this accident.”

Cllr Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of this tragic accident and our thoughts are with the families of the two adults who lost their lives. We are however, very thankful that none of children suffered life threatening injuries.

“We would like to acknowledge the bravery and courage of the children and the way they behaved at the scene of the accident.  We would also like to thank the emergency services for their prompt and highly efficient response to the incident.  I would also like to say how grateful we are to the people of the area who acted swiftly to help the injured and look after the children.

Marion Davis, Director of Children’s Services at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Our priority now is to provide a package of support to the children involved and their families, which will include the provision of counselling sessions for as long as necessary.”

“Each child will be affected differently and our aim is to support them so that they can quickly overcome any problems as a result of this experience.”
