Bracebridge Bathing Belles
Summer has come early at a residential care home for older people in Atherstone.
Residents at Warwickshire County Council’s Bracebridge Court have been reminiscing and sharing fond memories of days gone by at the seaside.
Seventy-four year old Sylvia Norman couldn’t wait to have her photo taken as a 1950’s bathing belle.
Sylvia lives in Atherstone and has respite care at Bracebridge Court. She said: “We’ve had great fun sharing fond memories of times we’ve spent at the seaside.”
Activities Co-ordinator Christine Jenking explained that Bracebridge often loan reminiscence resources from Karen Peters, a local lady who has an extensive memorabilia collection.
Christine said: “The weather had been so cold that we all needed cheering up and the seaside was a good place to go. We had great fun putting together a display board of some of the old seaside postcards!” she added.
Milly Thumbwood, Manager of Bracebridge Court for Warwickshire County Council, said: “Reminiscence is essentially a way of communicating. It is about tapping into our senses through sound, smell, sight, taste and touch. Research shows that it is an effective way of working with people with memory problems and early onset dementia.”
“It is also an opportunity for people to get together and share some of their history.”
