Cyber bullying – you tell us

A survey from Warwickshire’s Anti-bullying Partnership to gather the views of parents and professionals about cyber-bullying goes online next week (Tuesday 1 June).

The definition of Cyber Bullying is the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly mobile phones and the internet, deliberately to upset someone else.

The survey has been launched following recommendations from last year’s research into the subject which suggested that the partnership should do more to find out about the support needs of adults to help them protect children and young people.

Warwickshire County Council’s Anti-bullying Co-ordinator Rachel Evans said: “Research carried out by the partnership in 2009 tells us that almost one in four young people have experienced cyber bullying, so its effects are widespread.

“For us to be effective in developing the right support resources we need people living or working with children and young people from all around the county to complete the survey.

“It is a quick and anonymous process and we will use the information gathered for planning purposes only. However, if you are a parent, a carer or someone working with children and you have concerns about bullying please contact 0845 090 8044 for further advice.”

Warwickshire County Councillor Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families added: “The partnership works extremely hard with our schools, families and communities to effectively promote positive behaviours and stamp out bullying.

“Anti-bullying guidance and projects are always delivered in imaginative and thought-provoking ways and a lot of effort goes in to shaping advice and support that people really need. This questionnaire is a good example of this approach and I hope many people will take the opportunity to share their views and experiences.”

Warwickshire’s anti-bullying partnership is made up of Warwickshire County Council, schools, Warwickshire Police and a range of other agencies including Connexions, Relate and Victim Support who work together to influence positive behaviours and stamp out bullying.
