Volunteer case study: WCC employees

Did you know that many of the county council’s employees give up their spare time to volunteer in the community?

Here are just a few who, through their actions, make a big impression on Warwickshire society…

• Jill Chambers, Library and Information Assistant at Stratford Library, volunteers with Girl Guiding, mostly with Rainbows, but is also a qualified Brownie leader.

• Gian Clare, a Senior Account Officer in Resources, was one of the founder members of the Leamington Peace Festival, One World Link (with Bo in Sierra Leone) and Action 21 (Local Agenda 21), and is Chairman of Warwick District United Nations Association and also of the Central Region.

• Dawn Clutton, a Membership Team Leader in Pensions, is an Assistant Guide Guider in Lillington and helps run 5th Leamington Guides every week.

• Di Gough, a Youth Development Administrator with Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service, is a Ranger Guider with Cubbington Ranger Guides in Leamington Spa, with a very busy and active Unit of girls aged 15 to 21.

• Alison Insley, a Transformation and Engagement Officer in the Customers, Workforce & Governance directorate, has been a school PTA secretary, a regular helper and Committee Member at Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for 1st Kenilworth and a squash coach at LA Fitness in Warwick, coaching children every Saturday morning.

• Nicola Lomas, Children’s Joint Commissioning Manager, supports other Guiders in the Leamington and Southam area to provide challenging activities to 1,000 members, and runs a Brownie Pack herself.  “This gives me the chance every week to enjoy the company of 35 enthusiastic girls aged 7 to10 who are learning to ‘Do Their Best’ and can be guaranteed to make me smile whatever we happen to be doing that week - first aid, fund raising for charities, nature trails…”, says Nicola.

• Rob Phillips, a Corporate Accountant in Resources, volunteers at Radio Warneford, the hospital radio for Warwick Hospital.

• Julie Seymour, an Office Services Team Leader in the Environment & Economy directorate, spends a lot of her spare time volunteering for the local branch of Cats Protection.

• Phil Triggs, Group Manager of Treasury and Pensions, has worked with the Thames Valley Police Special Constabulary since 1999 and is now a Special Sergeant, working in Oxford. He also joined a small Warwickshire local government team on Voluntary Service in Sierra Leone last year.

• Clare Woodhead, a New Ways of Working Support Team Manager in ICT, is currently serving as chair person for Radford Semele School PTA.
