Young people get chance to take to the airwaves

An online radio station run by young people in Kenilworth is calling on new volunteers to take to the airwaves.

Radio Abbey was set up in 2008 by Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service to encourage young people at Kenilworth Youth Centre to take part in positive activities for their community.

Now in its second year of broadcasting on the internet, the station wants to expand it’s offering by encouraging 12 to 18-year-olds from youth centres across the county to come up with their own show.

At present, listeners can tune in on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7pm until 9pm but they are looking to extend the stations’ hours.

Andy Norman, District Youth and Community Worker for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, said: “Young people at Kenilworth Youth Centre have really embraced Radio Abbey, so we’re keen to expand that enthusiasm.

“We’re looking for presenters from across the county who can record a show at their youth centre, and if it’s suitable, we will play it on Radio Abbey.”
