Nuneaton group helps reduce teenage pregnancies

Young people in Nuneaton and Bedworth are enjoying better access to relationships and sexual health information thanks to the work of a group organised by Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign.

The Better Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy Subgroup was set up in 2006 to tackle the high teenage pregnancy rates in the borough, using a variety of methods including education and contraception.

Over the last four years, the work of the group has: increased the variety of settings that young people can access relationships and sexual health information to include youth clubs, schools, North Warwickshire and Hinckley College and Connexions; enabled around 150 staff access RSE training with 80 trained to distribute condoms; and worked in partnership to organise a variety of one-off events.

Helen Fielden, Warwickshire’s Respect Yourself Campaign co-ordinator, said: “There has been a downward trend in the number of under-18s in the borough since 1998 and that has been helped by the various organisations involved in the steering group and other partners.

“Work continues at a pace with this years focus on educating vulnerable and hard to reach groups of young people about relationships and sexual health.”
