Drivers put school children at risk

An increasing number of drivers are flouting the law and putting the lives of children and School Crossing Patrols at risk.

In the last week there has been another prosecution of the driver concerned in an incident with a School Crossing Patrol in Rugby, but it follows similar incidents in Kenilworth and North Warwickshire.

The driver in Rugby received a £650 fine and four points on their licence.

Warwickshire Road Safety Unit has warned drivers this week not to flout the law concerning School Crossing Patrols, and says that any who do will be prosecuted.

Cllr Richard Hobbs, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, said: “Driver behaviour has deteriorated over the years and is putting the lives of School Crossing Patrols and young children at risk.

“There have been three drive-through prosecutions recently in Kenilworth, North Warwickshire and last week in Rugby. Both Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire Police are concerned about the increase and I can’t understand why some drivers continue to act so irresponsibly.”

Stan Milewski, Principal Road Safety Officer at Warwickshire County Council, added: “Drivers who are prosecuted for a drive-through at a School Crossing Patrol site face a fine of up to £2,000 and up to 6 points on their licence.

“Our School Crossing Patrols have a difficult job at the best of times and do a wonderful job in keeping our children as safe as possible on local roads. However, incidents such as a drive-through do cause a lot of undue stress and fear in local communities.”
