Live and Dangerous 2010

More than 1,500 Warwickshire primary school children will be learning how to deal with emergency situations at Live and Dangerous 2010.

Held at Gaydon’s Heritage Motor Centre, the four day event is an opportunity for 10 and 11-year-olds to explore the potential road safety hazards they may face on their journey to a new secondary school.

They will be faced with a series of scenarios including - how to evacuate a coach in an emergency, cycling and the dangers of HGVs, in car safety and walking safely to school.

In addition, Warwickshire County Council’s Emergency Planning Unit is delivering a situation around the ‘Go in, Stay in, Tune in’ message with a group of drama students from Stratford College. And a stunt cyclist will give an alternative take on safety.

The event is aimed at year six pupils from Warwickshire who are due to transfer from primary to secondary schools in September.

Many will be facing new journeys and using different forms of transport for the first time as they travel to a new school, and the event highlights some of the dangers they may face.

Cllr Richard Hobbs, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, said: “Each scenario gives youngsters the opportunity to explore dangers and develop strategies for dealing with potentially dangerous situations.

“This is a hugely beneficial exercise which helps over 1,500 pupils each year prepare for secondary school life.”

To make Live and Dangerous happen, Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit and Fire and Rescue Service work in partnership with Dairy Crest Distribution and Stratford College.
