Warwickshire marks Armed Forces Day
Warwickshire County Council’s Chairman joined the Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire Martin Dunne to hoist the Armed Forces Day flag to show the county’s support for the country’s servicemen and women.
Armed Forces Day occurs on 26 June and local authorities around the country were invited to hoist the flag simultaneously at 10.30am on Monday, 21 June.
The flag, which flies outside the main entrance to county council headquarters at Shire Hall, will remain aloft until Armed Forces Day.
In 2009, over 3,000 flags were lofted around the British Isles, 500 by local authorities, as the nation demonstrated its support for armed forces personnel.
The flag was hoisted by Martin Dunne, Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire, on the day it was announced that 300 armed forces personnel had lost their lives in Afghanistan. He said: “At this sad moment we are reminded of the need to support the many men and women who are serving the country overseas.”
His thoughts were echoed by Cllr Jose Compton, Chairman of Warwickshire County Council which has hosted a series of homecoming parades for service staff. She said: “The County Council has hosted several parades for returning servicemen and women. Hoisting and flying this flag is another show of our unstinting support for the armed forces.”
