Course helps young people drive down risks on the road

Helping young people in Bedworth understand the risks of the road is the aim of a pre-learner driving course running this summer.

The 10-week course, organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service and 90-One Education, offers 14 to 19-year-olds the chance to learn driving theory and take part in practical lessons in a controlled environment.

In workshops they are learning about road safety, hazard awareness, the cost of insurance and causes of collisions, consequences of drink or drug driving and can gain accreditation through the ASDAN Activities Award.

Thirty young people are taking part in the sessions, which are held every Tuesday and Friday evening until July 21.

Matt Mancini, Locality Co-ordinator (Bedworth) for Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people in the area and already we have noticed them mature and develop their confidence, becoming independent and raising their aspirations.

“All participants have fun whilst learning really important lessons that prepare them to be responsible road users.

“It also highlights the Youth and Community Service’s commitment to listening to young people by providing activities when they need them including Friday evenings and weekends.”
