Rubbish work delights Leamington’s schoolchildren
Children in the Leamington North cluster of schools have been cleaning up their patch in another of Warwickshire County Council’s extended services team’s after schools initiatives.
Children from Milverton Primary, Telford Infant and Brookhurst Primary, along with their parents, have been litterpicking after school hours after joining forces with the district council’s Big Tidy Up campaign.
The scheme came about following a community forum meeting in which the cluster co-ordinator consulted with the local community about what they thought schoolchildren could do in their areas.
Litterpicking was among the suggestions. The cluster co-ordinator contacted the district who provided equipment and groups of children and their families collected recyclable and non-recyclable items.
Councillor Heather Timms, portfolio holder for Children, Young People and Families said: “It is always pleasing when community forums have such a positive outcome especially with children playing such an important part. Everyone has worked together for the common aim of the community.
“And, of course, children have also been taught important messages about recycling and pride in their area as an added benefit. I am delighted for all involved.”
One of the pupils involved, Milly of year 5, had another very important reason for doing the litter pick. She said: “It is important to pick litter up and put it in the right place so it doesn’t have to go to landfill.”
