Celebrating Warwickshire’s young community heroes

Six groups of young people who have made a positive contribution to Warwickshire’s communities have been recognised at the annual Crimebeat High Sheriff Awards.

The ceremony, presented by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire Richard Hardy, recognised the projects helping young people stay safe and out of trouble in their communities.

Six projects received an award at Hatton Country World on Thursday 24 June, including:

Share your problems (co-ordinated by Positive about Young People’s Early Intervention Team at All Saints School, Nuneaton);
Tell, tell, tell (Co-ordinated by Positive about Young People at Croft Junior School, Nuneaton);
Choices (Co-ordinated by the Good Days 2 programme, delivered by Positive about Young People, in Rugby);
Famous for Nothing (co-ordinated by Positive about Young People in Whitnash);
Respect Recorder Group (co-ordinated by Rokeby Primary School, Rugby);
Beat Bullying Cyber Mentors (co-ordinated by Kineton High School, Stratford).

Each project tackles a range of issues including bullying, drugs, graffiti or anti-social behaviour. They improve the lives of young people and make a positive impact on communities.

Crimebeat, a charity funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and the private sector, is managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme. It aims to reduce crime, the fear of crime and to create safer communities. This initiative enables and empowers young people to make a real difference and also encourages them to feel part of their communities.

The High Sheriff of Warwickshire, Richard Hardy, said: “Warwickshire Crimebeat helps young people to make their own decisions as to how they can enhance their lives and that of their community.

“The funding helps them tackle some very real issues with creativity and initiative, and for that, I congratulate them for their hard work and determination.”

Michael Maguire, Head of Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “As always, young people have been involved with some fantastic Crimebeat projects enabling them to make a positive contribution to their community.

“It has been another bumper year and the groups nominated are just an example of the work happening across the county.”

Cllr Heather Timms, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, added: “It is wonderful to see young people embracing opportunities such as these and understanding the role they play in creating positive communities.

“They should be very proud of what they have achieved and I am sure the great work will continue.”
