Council remains ‘optimistic’ on Academy funding

Warwickshire County Council has confirmed that the new Nuneaton Academy will open its doors in September as planned.

Cllr Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, told a meeting of full council today (July 20) that she remains “optimistic” that the project will receive Government funding. Education Secretary Michael Gove is currently reviewing every new school project on a case by case basis.

Cllr Timms said: “What the new Government has said is that they will look at each case on its merits. We are optimistic that the Nuneaton Academy still meets the new Government’s criteria for funding in that it involves the closure of two schools, it is targeted at raising standards in an area where attainment has been historically low and where the present building stock is inadequate to deliver the Academy’s education vision.”

The Nuneaton Academy will open in September initially on two sites in existing buildings at Alderman Smith and Manor Park schools. A brand new school building is earmarked for development on the current Alderman Smith school site, and is intended to be completed by September 2013.

Warwickshire County Council has enlisted a strong educational partner in North Warwickshire & Hinckley College - rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted - to operate the Academy.

Cllr Timms revealed that the public will have further chance to comment on the Academy proposals at the planning application stage, scheduled to be in April 2011.

She also urged the people of Nuneaton to get behind the project and support the new school.

Cllr Timms added: “For too long children in this area have had to manage with provision described by Ofsted as ‘satisfactory’ at best. Alderman Smith School was performing at an ‘inadequate’ level and not providing children with the education they deserve.

“This new school gives a tremendous opportunity to make a real positive difference to the lives and opportunities of the children of this area. What it needs now is the support of all members of the community to pull together in the best interests of the children.”

The Government has indicated that decisions will be made on capital programmes later this summer.
