A summer of discovery

Warwickshire County Council’s Heritage Education will be starting off five weeks of fun, discovery and family events this summer with special events on next week in the heart of Warwick.

‘Surviving the British Summer’ takes place on Friday 30 July between 10am and 12pm and again at from 2pm – 4pm at Market Hall Museum, Warwick. The sessions explore techniques used by Guides over the last 100 years to cope with the British summer when camping and having adventures out of doors. Families are invited along to come and make a welly peg to keep tents tidy and a paper sun hat.

These activities are linked to the museum’s summer exhibition, Promises: 100 years of Guiding and participation costs £2.50 per child (or £1 for under 5s). There is no need to book ahead and all ages are welcome, although under 8s must be accompanied by an adult.

Promises: 100 years of Guiding, celebrates the centenary of the founding of Girl Guiding and will be running from Saturday 24 July until Tuesday 24 August 2010 at Market Hall Museum. There is no charge for entry at Market Hall.

On Saturday 31 July, families can travel back in time to an Elizabethan Warwick by visiting a Tudor Market Stall, meeting the traders and inspecting their fine tableware - any ‘goodly’ housewife would be proud to use these platters and jugs! The market stall will be in the Market Square in Warwick from 10am to 3pm and for £2.50 children can have a go at making their own piece of tableware to take home. There is no need to book a place, just drop by.

These events are just two of around seventy family events at eleven venues all over Warwickshire run by Heritage Education as part of their summer programme. You can find out more about what’s on locally at online at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/heritgeeducation or by calling 01926 412069.
