Project warns ‘guns and knives cut lives’

‘Guns and knives cut short lives’ is the message from young people in Leamington who have launched a new project thanks to funding from Warwickshire Crimebeat.

The group of 12 to 16-year-olds created a notepad - reminding others about the consequences of guns and knives - as part of a project called ‘Rise Above Weapons’.

The designs were created over a fortnight by young people at the Sydni Centre POD in Leamington, provided by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme.

Sonia Brench, Senior Activity Worker from the Positive about Young People programme, said: “The group have worked really hard to come up with an eye-catching message to remind others about the consequences of getting involved with guns or knives.

“Using funding from Warwickshire Crimebeat, they can distribute them to schools and events to raise awareness of these issues.”

Editors Notes

Crimebeat is a charity funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and the private sector, and is managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme.

It aims to reduce crime, the fear of crime and to create safer communities. This initiative enables and empowers young people to make a real difference and also encourages them to feel part of their communities.

POD sessions are run by trained activity workers from Positive about Young People and other appropriate agencies to build relationships, talk, listen, offer guidance and positive role models, or to signpost young people to other support services where necessary such as Early Intervention Teams or Mentoring.
