Bermuda Goes Wild with £50,000 from Community Spaces
Bermuda Village Residents Association (BVRA) has successfully drawn down £49,798.57 from the Community Spaces programme to deliver a natural play scheme, Bermuda Goes Wild! at Bermuda Lake, Nuneaton.
The Lake site will see, over the next 12 months, new natural play features installed which aim to encourage young people to play in this more countryside site in a fun and interactive way, whilst teaching them about the local environment and how to respect it.
Working with Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council the Residents Association has developed this project in a bid to improve the lake, encourage more people to visit and provide new facilities for local families.
“This is fantastic news for the local area, and we are delighted to have been successful in our bid for funding. Not only will the new natural play features be a great addition to this wonderful site, but the activities that will take place during its creation will be good fun for all the local families in the area,” said Bob Chambers, Chair of BVRA.
The project will see a number of different events and activities take place as it is delivered and will work with local schools to involve children in the projects delivery.
Examples of what will appear on site include willow sculptures and a willow bed; pond dipping areas and a walkway though the reed beds; a history zone recognising the sites links to the coal mines; and a woodland trail.
Catherine Marks, Warwickshire County Council’s Project Manager, Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods, said: “I am really pleased to have been able to support this project that BVRA have put together.
"It really shows what local communities can achieve when they work together, and with links to Bermuda Park and Eliot Court, the two neighbouring communities, I think we will deliver a successful project for all the community.”
“I would like to congratulate BVRA on their application – this is a great example of how we can use our natural countryside to create new play opportunities. Other groups could also benefit from this fund.
"The programme, which is funded through the Big Lottery Fund and managed by Groundwork UK, helps community groups in England create or improve green, open spaces to enhance people’s quality of life,” said Jo Webb Community Spaces Facilitator.
Community Spaces grants start at £10,000. To find our more log on to http://www.communityspaces.org.uk.
The first community event will be taking place on Sunday 12th September, 10am – 3pm, at Bermuda Lake. Further information will be available nearer the time.
