Facility opens doors for young homeless

A new accommodation project in Nuneaton has opened its doors to young homeless people.

The Youth Accommodation Programme, run by homeless charity Coventry Cyrenians in partnership with the Warwickshire Supporting People Team and Warwickshire Social Care, was officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton and Bedworth.

The project has been funded by Warwickshire County Council to offer accommodation and support for young people aged 16-24, who may be leaving care, are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service offers housing, advice and support to the residents for a maximum of two years.

The building has seven fully furnished bedrooms, a communal kitchen, lounge, laundry facilities and a large gardened area. There is also a designated ‘crash pad’ unit to provide emergency accommodation.

Each resident will have their own designated project worker who will work with them to address their needs and support them to live independently in the future.

Kim Harlock of Warwickshire County Council said: “We are pleased to be working with Coventry Cyrenians to provide young, vulnerable people with the support they need to turn their lives around and move onto independence.

“The support that each resident receives goes further than putting a roof over someone’s head. It is about supporting young people to receive help with their personal, employment, training and living needs and to make a positive contribution to the community that they live in.”
