‘Council Surveyor’ was really rogue energy seller
A man who claimed to be a ‘council home energy surveyor’ when he unexpectedly visited the home of an elderly Warwickshire resident was really a rogue energy supply company salesperson.
Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Service is warning residents about this approach because an elderly person almost signed a contract to change their supplier after the salesperson pressured their way in to her home.
Even when challenged, the salesperson was reluctant to leave without a signature.
Trading Standards Officers are warning householders that such is the competition in the energy supply field that some unscrupulous door to door representatives are prepared to use any underhand sales tactic to get householders to change their supplier.
Whilst changing energy supplier is a straightforward process, consumers who unwittingly switch on the doorstep may end up paying more for their gas or electricity than they were already doing.
The cost of energy varies widely between suppliers, depending upon how much you use and how you pay. Rogue energy sales people are only interested in signing you up to their company and earning commission, they don’t care if you end up paying more for your energy.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advise consumers to shop around for the best energy deals. Don’t change your contract with the first person who comes to your door, whatever they say. Use a price comparison website to find the best deal.
