This summer get some ‘hands-on’ history
Families are having fun and learning about the past every Friday during the summer holidays thanks to Heritage Education’s exciting events programme.
Staff from the county council service have already joined families for a medieval themed picnic telling tales of Robin Hood and King Arthur at St John’s Museum.
There are still places left for activities taking place in the weeks until the schools go back in September, but interested families should hurry to book as these are limited.
On 20 August, people can participate in the Warwick Photo Challenge, a treasure hunt with a twist where people create a photo album in a day by following heritage education clues to find Warwick locations photographing them.
Anyone who makes a photo album by 5pm will be judged with the winner getting a behind the scenes tour of Warwickshire Museum. The activity will cost £5 per photo album entered.
Back by popular demand for 2010 is the Warwick Bug Hunt at Hill Close Gardens on Friday 27 August. Perfect for younger children, Keeper of Natural History, Steven Falk, will help them seek out and learn more about creepy-crawlies living in our gardens and everyone can make a bug souvenir to take home. Tickets cost £5.00 per child and £1 for accompanying adults.
To round off the summer, the service have organised fossil hunting trip to Cross Hands Quarry on Friday 3 September. Jon Radley (Keeper of Geology at Warwickshire Museum) will lead the session, helping children identify fossils from Warwickshire’s Jurassic past.
Families can dig for their own fossils and take home any that they find. Tickets for this event include transport to the site and are priced at £17.50 per person or £45 for a group of three and must include one adult are strictly limited.
Places for any of the listed events can be booked with the service by calling 01926 412069.
