Warwickshire welcome’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer

Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is this week welcoming the newly appointed Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Jim Onions.

Jim has taken over from the previous Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Simon Frost who is retiring from the post.

With over 26 years in the service, Jim began his career as a firefighter in 1984 with West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service.  During that time he has specialised in a number of roles including managing capital finance projects, media liaison, training, and fire research and investigation.

In 2005 Jim was promoted to Area Manager at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service with responsibility for community safety, fire safety enforcement and operational response standards.

During the 2007 Gloucestershire floods, Jim played a pivotal role in managing resources and operations in flooded areas. He is trained as a ‘Gold’ Commander for managing major incidents and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Gloucestershire.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Jim Onions said: “During my time with West Midlands and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Services, I have worked closely with the teams from Warwickshire and have always been impressed by their professionalism and commitment.

"I therefore couldn’t be more pleased to now be part of what I believe is and will continue to be, one of the best Fire and Rescue Services in the Country. I am looking forward to working with our teams to help make Warwickshire a safer place to live, work and visit.”

Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Councillor Richard Hobbs said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Jim to Warwickshire. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge on managing floods, an area of work which we are looking to develop.

"I’m sure that he will play an instrumental role in the future development of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and I wish him the very best in his new role.”
