Ramsden Centre closed due to theft

The Warwickshire County Council run day care at the Ramsden Centre in School walk, Nuneaton, has been temporarily postponed after the lead was removed from the roof and a flood resulted in the building.

The effect on users was kept to a minimum.  All users were informed within an hour by county council staff and alternative arrangements were made for today and tomorrow at other centres in the area, notably Abbey Street.  Transport plans were altered accordingly to ensure no users were affected.

In the longer term, whilst the Ramsden Centre is out of service, a series of other venues in the area will be used so that the full programme of day services continues.

Council officers are assessing the damage and looking at a plan of repair for the building.  In the meantime, the council is working with Police to find those responsible.

Warwickshire County Council’s portfolio holder for Adult Social Care, Cllr Izzi Seccombe, said:  “I wholeheartedly applaud the efforts of county council staff who responded with incredible swiftness and efficiency to co-ordinate alternative transport and venues for the people who need the day services.  Their speedy resolution of the problem illustrates our commitment to the people who use our services.

“I would also express my disgust at the selfish and greedy actions of those who have taken the lead from the roof.  It is not petty vandalism; it is theft.  Not only have they created problems for some of the borough’s most vulnerable people but the expense in repairing the roof and the damage caused by the flood is a further drain on funds in a very difficult financial climate.

“These people are jeopardising services provided to communities; if anyone has seen anything or knows anything that might help to identify those responsible, I urge them to contact Warwickshire Police.”
