Heritage open days are launched

A whole range of venues, 52 in all, across Warwick District are participating in the National Heritage Open Days Scheme which run from 9-12 September.

Buildings of historical and cultural interest, both private and public, will open their doors free of charge with many offering free guided tours.

Among the venues is the Saltisford Canal Trust where visitors can go onto the only wheelchair accessible self-drive day boat in the midlands and sample some of the area’s rich boating history in its series of canals.

Those interested in Warwick District’s cultural buildings can choose from historic churches dating back nearly 1,000 years to the Wolseley’s Sustainable Buildings Centre in Leamington and the eco-house in Lillington which both offer a peak into the future.

Other buildings to open their doors will include:
The Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple
The Mission, the church in George street attended by Napoleon III
Warwick Quaker Meeting House in a rare chance to visit
Packwood House, the National Trust manor house which dates back to Tudor times and has an interesting history of its role in the English Civil War.

Guided walks will take in local delights such as Abbey Fields in Kenilworth, historic Leamington Spa with the Leamington Society and a look at the town’s celebrated ironworks.

Councillor Sue Gallagher, portfolio holder for culture at Warwick District Council, said:  “Warwick District has an incredible wealth of historical buildings with a rich and varied history.  The Heritage Open Days are a superb opportunity to see them and find out more about the history of the area."
