Young music-makers invited to hit the right notes

Young people have the opportunity to learn how to play musical instruments from around the world, thanks to a new Warwickshire County Council project launching in Nuneaton this month.

The World Music Programme is a partnership between Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service, the County Music Service, Positive about Young People and Voluntary Youth Sector, and has been funded by a grant of almost 18 thousand pounds from the Youth Music Power Play programme.

It provides 8 to 19-year-olds the opportunity to play instruments ranging from African djembe to Japanese Taiko, develop their own performances and use their skills to teach others.

Community musicians will deliver sessions and work alongside youth workers who will be able to explore new ways of delivering positive activities through music.

The first workshops will begin at Camphill’s CHESS centre and Hub119 from the week beginning 27 September 2010, leading up to a celebration event at Christmas.

Youth Arts Development Worker, Clare Mitchell said: “I haven’t met anyone who can resist banging a djembe drum and I can’t think of a better way to learn about the world and gain new skills.

“Thanks to Youth Music the young people of Nuneaton have a fantastic opportunity to learn about a whole variety of different cultures and ways to make music as well as have a lot of fun.”

Andrew Atkins, Director of Warwickshire’s County Music Service, said: "I am delighted to be working in partnership with the youth service as not only is it natural expansion to our multicultural music programme called Global Beats but we are also working with a whole set of young people who may not have thought about using the music service in the past.

“Music is a great leveller and transcends social, cultural and economic boundaries in a way which brings social cohesion to every community in Warwickshire.”
