Time for action on dementia
Warwickshire County Council and NHS Warwickshire are backing the World Alzheimer’s Day (21 September) campaign ‘Dementia. It’s time for action’.
Both organisations are committed to taking action by improving service provision for people with dementia and their carers, and by raising awareness amongst staff.
Although there are several different types of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common causes of the degenerative brain syndrome that affects memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion.
Dementia services are a key priority for Warwickshire County Council and NHS Warwickshire, as the prevalence of dementia increases with a growing older population. In Warwickshire there are an estimated 7,100 people with dementia and the figure is expected to rise to 11,000 by 2025.
As part of a joint strategy, NHS Warwickshire and the County Council are working on priority areas over the next four years to support people with dementia and their carers.
This includes timely identification and diagnosis; improved care and support throughout a patient’s journey; improved access to information; effective use of accommodation and assistive technology to support people to remain in their own homes for longer; and education and training support for staff who look after people with dementia and their carers.
Cllr Jose Compton, Dementia Champion for Warwickshire, said: “It is important that we use this day to raise awareness, encourage people to spot the early signs and highlight the value of carer’s for people with dementia.
"By working in partnership, Warwickshire County Council and NHS Warwickshire want to transform the way we deliver dementia services to improve quality of life for people living with the condition and their carers.”
Warwickshire has been recognised for its work in addressing dementia. The County Council is currently taking part in a Department of Health national pilot to support people affected by the condition by providing a dementia adviser service in partnership with the local Alzheimer’s Society and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust.
The Alzheimer’s Society provides a number of other services throughout the county that support both people with dementia and their carers. The Society’s Warwickshire Office provides an extensive range of information and advice, based at the dementia resource centre in Leamington Spa. In support of World Alzheimer’s Day the National Alzheimer’s Society will be running a number of memory walks around the country.
If you or a member of your family are living with dementia or have any concerns about memory problems and would like further information and support please contact Alzheimer’s Society Warwickshire Office on 01926 888899.
