Working with words in Warwick
Warwickshire County Record Office is running several events in support of the Warwick Words literary festival this October.
The first event, The Butler and the Lead Piping, on Saturday 2 October from 10am to 4pm, is a creative writing workshop run by playwright and Assistant Director at London Young Vic, Simon Startin.
Simon will use historical documents and objects from Warwickshire’s museums and archives to explore ways of creating character and narrative. This event costs £25; refreshments are provided but attendees are asked to bring their own lunch.
The second event, Creative Calligraphy, takes place on Friday 8 October from 10am to 4pm. Experienced calligrapher Jane Upson shows how to create your own design using simple calligraphy styles, inspired by our own collections at the Record Office. This event costs £25; refreshments are provided but attendees are asked to bring their own lunch.
Finally, attendees are shown how to read old handwriting in Palaeography for Beginners, which takes place on Saturday 9 October from 9.15am to 12.15pm. The session will feature wills, inventories and deeds of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This workshop costs £12.
All events take place at Warwickshire County Record Office, Priory Park, off Cape Road, Warwick. Booking is strongly recommended, through the Warwick Words Box Office, by calling 01926 776438.
Rowan Fisher, Learning and Outreach Officer at Warwickshire County Record Office, said: “We are looking forward to supporting Warwick Words and showing how the treasures held at the Record Office can be used in different ways.”
