Novel ideas

Eight artists take a fresh look at books in a free exhibition this October in Warwick.

The brand new display, ‘Novel Ideas’ is housed at the Pedlars Gallery in Warwickshire Museum, Market Place and is open 10am to 5pm from 1 October. The theme ties in well with Warwick Words Festival of Literature and Spoken Word running at the same time.

The eight artists whose work is featured are from Warwickshire and as far afield as Ireland and the USA. Emma House, Designer at the Museum, is curating the exhibition in which the artists display their unique creations – all based on books. She said: “There’s a lot on display to fire your imagination, from books that you can wear (ceramic-bound ‘booklaces’) to miniature folding fairy tales, traditional bookbinding and sculptured musical scores.”

Between 2pm and 4pm every Thursday until 4 November, members of the public are invited to attend an ‘Altered Books’ session where artist Pat Round will be demonstrating the techniques she uses to make these beautiful books.

The idea for Altered Books came from an American website where artists who live long distances apart send each other a book which they customise with their own ideas and artwork, then send to the next person. The result is a unique, original work of art with several people’s work in it.

At the sessions Pat will show museum visitors the various materials and methods she and her group use to make an Altered Book. No booking is necessary, admission free, all ages welcome to join in.
