Chess Masters in the making

Two Warwickshire schoolboys have picked up national medals for their chess prowess.

The boys from Ettington Primary School competed last weekend in the national Chess Federation finals in Surrey.

Having won enough points at the Midlands semi-final the boys proudly represented their school, and George Wade aged 10 went on to win a silver medal and Dillon Patel aged 8 a bronze medal.

The boys started playing chess three years ago at an after school club ‘Chess Rocks’ run by a volunteer and school grandparent Derek Nelson.

‘Chess Rocks’ is a national scheme set up by a redundant business man who happened to also be a Chess Master, he wanted to see more children having the opportunity to play chess at school.

Mr Nelson who started Ettington School’s chess club said: “I have always loved chess and wanted to offer the opportunity to children at Ettington School.

“Chess is a great game and teaches children strategy, logic and hones their ability to plan and think further ahead than the next two minutes.

“The club is open to all pupils at the school both those who have no knowledge of the game right through to those that want to play a better game. I am delighted with the boys success and sure it will lead to more.”
