Cultural exhibition launched

An exhibition created by Warwickshire school children to celebrate Black History Month launched with a special event last night.

Over 120 guests from all over the county attended the launch event at Stratford Civic Hall where they previewed the ‘Heritage Shared’ exhibition – a display featuring art projects and interactive elements created by pupils from four Warwickshire Primary Schools on the theme of cultural diversity.

The event offered performances from young people with dance group Street Productions and singer Benjamin Buffong wowing the audience. Keynote speaker Hardeep Singh Kohli delivered a humorous and thought provoking speech reminding people that black history is part of a shared history in which every member of society has a part to play.

The exhibition has been open to the public all week at the civic hall but will be transferred to Warton Orton Primary School in North Warwickshire on Monday to begin tour of the four schools involved in the project. By the end of the month all four schools including Rugby’s Northlands Primary, Nuneaton’s St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and St Anthony’s in Leamington Spa will have hosted the exhibition.

In each area, local schools have been invited in to the settings to find out more about the work on display which includes facts, pictures, and models, created over the last academic year. The county council has designed some lesson plans for the visiting schools to help them implement this work.

Equality and Diversity Officer Shearon Williams said: “The four schools have worked extremely hard on the exhibition and to embed race issues into their curriculum teaching. We are looking forward to supporting more of our schools as they undertake similar projects this year.”

Warwickshire County Councillor Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children Young People and Families said: “The exhibition is a unique and inspiring way to celebrate Black History Month, bringing focus to our society’s ethnic diversity.  It offers fantastic opportunities for schools in the county to share cultures and learn from each other and is a great public showcase for the excellent work of some of our pupils.”
