Matches, Matches, Never Touch!

Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service will be visiting primary schools this week to educate pupils on the dangers of fire in support of National Schools’ Fire Safety Week (4 – 8 October 2010).

As part of the visits, firefighters will be working with children in years one and five promoting key fire safety messages including not playing with lighters or matches.

During the lesson the children will be learning about the importance of fire safety and prevention, getting hands on experience of how to make a 999 call, learn stop drop and roll techniques and how to plan an escape route.

Schools Liaison Officer, Ruth Greenhalgh said: “The main aim of the sessions, are to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of fire safety in the home.

"This includes learning about the dangers of playing with matches or lighters and what children can do if they find them in their home.  All of the sessions are very interactive and provide essential experience of what to do in the event of a fire, including how to make a 999 call.”

Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, Councillor Richard Hobbs said: “National Schools’ Fire Safety Week is a great opportunity for us to showcase the excellent work we are already doing to keep children safe in Warwickshire.

"The schools programme, which is run by Warwickshire County Councils Fire and Rescue Service, is run in both primary and secondary schools across the county and helps children to learn life saving skills, which can be adapted to both the home and school environment.”
