Warwickshire News Mine

An experiment using OpenCalais and Google Maps to tag news stories

Going social

This week (4th – 8th October) is national Customer Service Week and, in recent months, Warwickshire County Council has increasingly been using social networks to get closer to its customers.

Twitter, Twitpic, AudioBoo and YouTube are just some of the communication channels the county council has been using to reach out to people in new ways – and it seems to be working!

The council’s Twitter news service (http://twitter.com/wcc_news) now has over 400 followers, as does its school closures service (http://twitter.com/wccschoolclosed).

The county’s only tweeting deer, Oisin (http://twitter.com/OisinTheDeer), who lives at Market Hall Museum in Warwick, has a loyal following of nearly 200 – and growing!

But social networking isn’t all about words… it’s also about pictures, sounds and videos too.

The council’s news team use Twitpic (http://www.twitpic.com/photos/wcc_news) to distribute photos of events from around the county and people can listen to audio clips about council campaigns and news stories on AudioBoo (http://audioboo.fm/wcc_news).

YouTube is used by a number of services and the county council has its own dedicated YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/warwickshirecc).

Recent uploads include a film about the Care2Work initiative and a video of the council’s interpreters and translators talking about their roles and experiences.
