Next step for new recycling centre
Warwickshire County Council is inviting bids to build a new £6.5 million Household Waste Recycling Centre at Lower House Lane in North Warwickshire.
The contract to design and build the centre has been approved by the cabinet and is the next stage of the plan for a joint facility with Staffordshire County Council which will be an alternative to the existing site at Grendon.
The centre at Baddersley Ensor will also include a transfer station for materials destined for the new waste to energy plant at Four Ashes in Staffordshire.
Grendon is no longer an adequate site for a modern Household Waste Recycling Centre and the new venue will remove congestion on the A5 arising from vehicles queuing to access the current site.
The new facility at Lower House Lane will have an increased capacity to separate waste for re-use and recycling, the ability to transfer non-recyclable waste to other facilities and improve health and safety for residents.
Planning consent was also granted by regulatory committee on October 12 to construct this new state of the art facility.
Cllr Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economy, said: “We feel that by working across the boundary with Staffordshire, we can offer our residents the best value for money.
“Lower House Lane will be a significantly better facility than is currently available to residents in North Warwickshire and will go some way to helping us meet our ambitions for recycling in that part of the county.”
The cabinet will also be considering a proposal to seek tenders for a £3.5 million contract for the treatments of street sweepings and gully waste.
New technology can process up to 85 per cent of these materials, which have previously been disposed of at landfill at a cost of £700,000 to the taxpayer. The annual contract will cost around £350,000.
