High profile local issues to go to Overview and Scrutiny

On 3 November, Warwickshire County Council’s Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee will meet to consider important local issues.

In the morning session, the agenda includes discussion on the action plan put in place to deliver the improvement plan for the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service agreed by the county council in July.

During the afternoon, the scrutiny committee will look at the environmental and economic impact for the county of the proposed high speed rail link between Birmingham and London.  A meeting has been convened for the new year to look at the proposed route.

The Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee is made up of councillors from across all political parties.  It forms part of the checks and balances within the local democratic system, reviewing issues of local concern and holding decision makers to account to ensure that local services, and decisions about local services, meet the needs of local communities.

Following its discussions, the committee may make recommendations to the Council’s Cabinet, the decision making body.

Cllr John Whitehouse, Chair of the Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said “Both the implementation of the Fire and Rescue Improvement Plan and the HS2 proposal are matters of significant public concern and it is important that they are considered and debated in an open forum.

“One of the fundamental principles of Overview and Scrutiny is that we reflect and advocate the voices and concerns of members of the public.  For this reason, stakeholders, such as the HS2 Action Groups, have been invited to participate”.

The meeting is being held in Shire Hall, Warwick, and is open to the public. The morning session to consider the implementation of the Fire and Rescue Improvement Plan will begin at 10am, with afternoon session to consider HS2 will begin at 2pm.
