Youth elections: your chance to get involved

Young wannabe politicians in Warwickshire have the chance to speak up on local and national issues for thousands of 11 to 19-years across the county.

Every year, Warwickshire County Council’s Youth and Community Service run elections in February for young people who are interested in becoming a Member of Youth Parliament and VOX, the Warwickshire Youth Council.

There are eight places available to represent Warwickshire on the UK Youth Parliament – which debates key issues in a special sitting in the House of Commons chamber annually - and three places per district for VOX.

MYPs and VOX act as a voice for young people in Warwickshire, particularly when it comes to commenting on local and national decisions affecting 11 to 19-year-olds. Examples of the some of the typical issues include university fees, jobs and sex education.

Shinderpaul Bhangal, IYSS Team Leader for Warwick, said: “The youth elections are a great opportunity for young people to get involved in local decision making and getting their voices heard by adults in positions of influence.

”If you’re passionate about issues affecting young people and want to make a difference, then get in touch with the youth service who can tell you more about the role and how to run for election.”

Young people who are interested in becoming an MYP or member of VOX, the Warwickshire Youth Council, should contact Shinderpaul Bhangal for more information on 01926 498088 or email shinderpaulbhangal@warwickshire.gov.uk.
