Fire service marks 3rd anniversary
Firefighters from across the county will be holding a two minute silence today (Tuesday 2nd November) to mark the third anniversary of the fire at Atherstone on Stour.
The act of remembrance will be held at 7.28pm to mark the loss of four Warwickshire Firefighters, Ashley Stephens, Darren Yates-Badley, John Averis and Ian Reid, who tragically lost their lives in a fire at a vegetable packing plant at Atherstone on Stour.
Chief Fire Officer, Graeme Smith said: "As we approach the third year anniversary of the tragic fire at Atherstone-on-Stour, we will be reflecting on the years passed and the impact the loss of our colleagues has had on the service.
"Our thoughts will be with the families of the firefighters who lost their lives in this tragic incident and the firefighters who serve with Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service as two minutes silence is held at fire stations throughout the county. Flags will also be at half mast.
“Although there are many challenges ahead we should not forget this significant moment in the history of Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, Councillor Richard Hobbs said: “I think that the two minutes silence is a fitting tribute to our firefighters. As the third anniversary approaches we will quietly reflect the tragic incident at Atherstone-on-Stour and I would hope that people in Warwickshire take this opportunity to remind themselves of the very real dangers firefighters face in the course of their duty to protect the communities they serve.”
The Chief Fire Officers will take part in formal parades at both Stratford and Alcester as a mark of respect at 7:28pm on the evening on Tuesday 2nd November.
