Innovative anti-bullying workshops for young people
Innovative, interactive workshops are being delivered to children in a number of Warwickshire schools in the run up to national Anti-bullying Week (15 to 19 November).
The sessions have been organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme to raise awareness of the consequences of getting involved in bullying.
Students will discuss what bullying is, identify why bullying happens, investigate the choices they have to ensure they don’t become involved and learn how they can get help if they have fallen victim to bullying.
Part of the ‘Your Streets, Your Schools’ programme – a series of music, dance, drama, art of lyric-based activity workshops to aimed at year six students – the sessions highlight the consequences of becoming involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.
Earlier this year a pilot programme began at a small number of schools in the county. These were so successful that they are now being developed to include a range of subjects including bullying, knife crime, substance misuse and racism.
Schools are then encouraged to further develop ideas collected during the sessions through PSHE and citizenship curriculum work, to help young people take ownership of a project that can be promoted in their local community.
Michael Maguire, Head of Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, said: “Your Streets Your Schools is designed to challenge young people’s perceptions and get them to think about potential consequences to their actions.
“We’ve used our experiences from the anti-gang workshops to tailor activities for the anti-bullying programme, which again has been well received in the schools it has taken place in so far.”
