Provost Williams Primary School pupil wins firework safety competition

Dominic McClay, a pupil at Provost Williams Primary School has won first prize in the poetry section of the Warwickshire Firework Safety Poetry and Poster Competition (Rugby Area), organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service.

Dominic will be presented with his prize at a school assembly on Friday 5th November at 9 a.m.

The aim of the competition is to remind children about the dangers of fireworks. Every year fireworks cause hundreds of avoidable injuries. Around half of all injuries happen to children under the age of 16 years, many of whom may have ugly burn scars, for life.

Dominic’s poem was chosen from over 250 entries and was the winning poem because it contains a number of safety messages yet was written in a concise and fun way. Dominic will be presented with a £10 book token and a printed copy of his poem. He will also see his poem featured as part of next year’s firework safety campaign.

Dominic’s poem:
Get out the fireworks,
Keep your pets in,
That noise will scare them,
The awful din!

Stay well back when you let one fly,
Then you can safely watch it
Whizz up in the sky.

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said: "I would like to congratulate the winners of this competition and thank all those who took part. The standard of entries was again very high this year and showed just how much young children know about keeping themselves safe on bonfire night.

"I know they will follow the guidance we are providing and have a safe and enjoyable 5th of November."
