Warwickshire MYPs debate in House of Commons

Four young people from Warwickshire have joined over 300 other Members of Youth Parliament from across the country to debate in the House of Commons chamber.

On Friday 29 October, the 11 to 18-year-olds discussed issues including the cost of university, sex education in schools and job opportunities. The issues were voted in by more than 2500 young people.

Warwickshire MYPs Kofie Mendez, Ruby Davies, Abbey Simkin and Seb Thompson represented young people in the county, supported by Warwickshire County Council.

Ruby Davies, MYP for Nuneaton and Bedworth, said: “It is a great opportunity for us to fulfil our roles as MYPs, acting as a voice for young people in Warwickshire when debating important national issues.

“It’s only the second time anyone other than MPs have done this in the House of Commons, so we are really privileged to have been involved in this high profile event.”

The event followed a UK Youth Parliament debate in the House of Commons last year, which was the first time anyone other than MPs had used the chamber.

Earlier this year, MPs voted by a majority of 499 to 21 to allow Members of Youth Parliament to debate in the House of Commons chamber every year for the life of the parliament.

The five issues debated were job opportunities; sex education; transport; university; and war.
The UK Youth Parliament is now calling for young people across the country to submit views on the debate topics, via the UK Youth Parliament website – http://www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk.
