Kingsbury Primary School pupil wins firework safety competition

Ben Smith, a pupil at Kingsbury Primary School has won first prize in the poetry section of the Warwickshire Firework Safety Poetry and Poster Competition (North Warwickshire Area), organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service.

Ben will be presented with his prize at a school assembly on Tuesday 9th November at 10:15 am.

The aim of the competition is to remind children about the dangers of fireworks. Every year fireworks cause hundreds of avoidable injuries. Around half of all injuries happen to children under the age of 16 years, many of whom may have ugly burn scars, for life.

Ben’s poem was chosen from over 180 entries and was the winning poem because it contains a number of safety messages yet was written in a concise and fun way. Ben will be presented with a £10 book token and a printed copy of his poem. He will also see his poem featured as part of next year’s firework safety campaign.

Ben’s poem:
Fireworks! Fireworks!
They’re loud but fun
They’re bright and sparkly
Some go off like a gun

Its good to enjoy the wonderfull sight
And watch them glow on the starey night
But please take care and watch from afar
With a grown up stand back and say
OOOH and AHHH

But always remember the dangers
There are
Never play with fireworks
And hold sparklers afar

The 5th of November is there to enjoy
For all the excited girls and boys
Just stay safe with a grown up
Warm and dry
And look out for the bonfire burning the guy

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said: "I would like to congratulate the winners of this competition and thank all those who took part. The standard of entries was again very high this year and showed just how much young children know about keeping themselves safe on bonfire night.

"I know they will follow the guidance we are providing and have a safe and enjoyable 5th of November."
