Wootton Wawen Primary School pupils win firework poem and poster competition

Thomas Holmes and Jack Ison, pupils at Wootton Wawen Primary School have won first prize in the poetry and poster sections of the Warwickshire Firework Safety Poetry and Poster Competition (Stratford Area), organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service.

They will be presented with their prizes at a school assembly on Thursday 11th November at 9 a.m

The aim of the competition is to remind children about the dangers of fireworks. Every year fireworks cause hundreds of avoidable injuries. Around half of all injuries happen to children under the age of 16 years, many of whom may have ugly burn scars, for life.

Thomas’s poem was chosen from over 130 entries and was the winning poem because it contains a number of safety messages yet was written in a concise and fun way. Thomas will be presented with a £10 book token and a printed copy of his poem. He will also see his poem featured as part of next year’s firework safety campaign.

Thomas’s poem:
Scary Furry Tale

Charlie was howling
It was the day
Bonfire night was on its way
Clatter and boom, crackle and crash
ZOOM under the table as quick as a flash
Whimper and cry quivering from head to tail
Not much of a bark, more of a wail.
Remember your pets on Bonfire night,
The bellowing noise will give them a FRIGHT!

Jack’s poster was chosen from almost 70 entries and was the winning poster because of its bright eye catching colours and great safety message. Jack will be presented with his prize, a £10 book token, at his school and will see his poster featured as part of next year’s firework safety campaign.

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said: "I would like to congratulate the winners of this competition and thank all those who took part. The standard of entries was again very high this year and showed just how much young children know about keeping themselves safe on bonfire night.

I know they will follow the guidance we are providing and have a safe and enjoyable 5th of November!"
