Newburgh Primary School pupil wins firework poem and poster competition

Roseanna Davies, a pupil at Newburgh Primary School has won first prize in the 7 and over age category of the Warwickshire Firework Safety Poem and Poster Competition (Warwick area), organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, and will be presented with her prize on Wednesday 10th November at 3pm.

The aim of the competition is to remind children about the dangers of fireworks. Every year fireworks cause hundreds of avoidable injuries. Around half of all injuries happen to children under the age of 16 years, many of whom may have ugly burn scars, for life.

Roseanna’s poem was chosen because it contains a number of safety messages yet was written in a concise and fun way. Roseanna will be presented with a £10 book token and a printed copy of her poem. She will also see her poem featured as part of next year’s firework safety campaign.

Roseanna’s Poem

Fireworks
Fireworks crackling
In the night sky
Up above
High high high

Keep your distance
Never touch
And you’ll enjoy bonfire night
Very much

Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said: "I would like to congratulate the winners of this competition and thank all those who took part. The standard of entries was again very high this year and showed just how much young children know about keeping themselves safe on bonfire night.

I know they will follow the guidance we are providing and have a safe and enjoyable 5th of November!"
