Extra care housing for Warwick
Work could soon start on a new extra care housing scheme in Warwick suitable for older people.
Members of Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet have recently approved the award of a contract to Housing 21 to build the new development on the site of the former Avon Court residential care home in All Saints’ Road, Warwick, which closed in July.
The decision was made by the County Council’s Cabinet following the evaluation of tenders from three previously-approved potential partners.
This could see construction getting under way as soon as Spring 2011, for completion and opening in Autumn 2012.The planned housing development would offer approximately 45 shared ownership or social rented self-contained apartments, each with their own front door, optional communal facilities, and the reassurance of 24-hour care and support available to residents as, when and if they need it.
Cllr Mrs Izzi Seccombe, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio-holder for Adult, Health and Community Services, said: “We want to give people greater choice about how they live in later life and this is the sort of accommodation we want to provide across the county.
"We know from local and national research that most people want to continue living as independently as possible, as they get older, for as long as they safely can. And that’s what extra care housing is all about.”
Extra care housing is emerging as the popular choice for older people, people with learning disabilities and people with disabilities who need help with daily living but do not want to give up their home.
In Warwickshire the programme to develop extra care housing is a shared commitment for the county council, district councils and colleagues from the care sector.
