How safe is your home?

Firefighters in south Warwickshire are asking ‘how safe is your home’ as part a drive to make communities safer.

The campaign, which is being run by Warwickshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue aims to highlight the danger of small fires in the home providing residents with key fire safety advice on where smoke alarms should be located and the safe use of electrical items.
Throughout the next two weeks firefighters will be patrolling local communities in Southam, Shipston, Studley, Bidford and Wellesbourne. They will also be visiting local schools to talk to young people and their parents about reducing the chances of having a fire in the home.

Watch Manager, Mark Styzacker said: "Whilst house fires in Warwickshire have reduced, the ones we do attend are often caused by cooking being left unattended or faulty wiring. In order to further reduce that risk, firefighters will be working with local communities to provide guidance and reassurance to residents, about how to prevent fires happening in the first place.

“There are very simple measures people can take to make their homes safer from fire and I hope that by working with communities we can help to make them safer by doing something as simple as fitting a smoke alarm or carrying out a home fire safety check.”

Portfolio Holder for Community Protection, Councillor Richard Hobbs said: “Working with local communities to drive down risk is a key part of the work we to do.

"The events taking place in south Warwickshire during the next two weeks will provide residents with the perfect opportunity to learn more about home fire safety and also how to reduce the risk of having a fire in their home.“
