Rhymes to cut crime
Young people in Lighthorne Heath have released a CD of poems highlighting messages that help tackle anti-social behaviour and crime.
The group, who attend the village POD, organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme, put together a number of rhymes after discussing a range of topics at a series of POD chats.
Six poems highlight issues such as drugs, bullying and crime in the hope that other young people in other areas of the county are inspired to spread their messages and do something positive in their community.
They were written by 14-year-old Kieran Bryant, 13-year-old Lucy Wing and 15-year-old Katie Henshaw.
Using funding from Warwickshire Crimebeat, the group spent time recording their work on to a CD, called ‘Purity of Poetry by the young people of Lighthorne Heath’, which they will distribute to their local schools.
Patrick Carroll, Senior Activity Worker at Positive about Young People, said: “The dedication of the three young people involved has been fantastic – they have spent much of their spare time making this project work and have received much positive feedback.
“They impressed everyone at a recent Parish Council Committee meeting after presenting the CD to members and were invited to promote their work to the local community during a Christmas Fair, so it has been very well received.
“We hope that other young people in Warwickshire will be inspired to use their initiative and come up with new projects that could benefit from Warwickshire Crimebeat funding.”
The album can be heard on the Positive about Young People website – http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/payp - where there are also examples of poems submitted as part of the ‘explode the ode’ project.
Crimebeat is a charity funded by the High Sheriff of Warwickshire and is supported by the private sector. It is managed by Warwickshire County Council’s Positive about Young People programme.
