Primary children are above the national average

More than three quarters of Warwickshire pupils completing Standard Assessment Tests in primary schools last year reached the nationally expected Level 4 or above in both English and mathematics.

The 2010 Key Stage 2 results have also revealed that around one quarter of pupils gained Level 5 in both English and maths. This means they will be starting secondary school well ahead of the national expected standard.

The overall figure for Level 4 and above in both English and maths was 77 per cent, which was the same as achieved in 2009. Of these the proportion of Warwickshire children reaching Level 4 and above in English was 83 per cent, mathematics 82 per cent and science was 87 per cent.

Warwickshire’s provisional figure for pupil’s achieving Level 5 was 25 per cent, which was a rise of about two percentage points from last year.

Warwickshire expects these figures will mean that local children continue to out perform the national average. It is expected that Warwickshire County Council’s performance will be around three percentage points above the national average for maintained schools in England at Level 4 and above, and two percentage points above the average for Level 5.

These results also compare well with results in local authorities that have similar population characteristics with Warwickshire.

Based on the county’s provisional results, Warwickshire’s pupils have done well – their results are around three percentage points above the average of these similar authorities.

Bob Hooper, Warwickshire County Council’s Head of School Performance, said: “We are very pleased to note that Warwickshire pupils continue to achieve above the national average.

“Warwickshire County Council congratulates everyone who performed well in the tests and recognises that this is a result of the hard work of the schools and parents that enable the pupils to achieve so well.”
